Baby’s first X-Mas

Pen just turned 5 months old last week and I’m reminded how fast time can fly. What seemed like an insurmountable task that first day we brought her home has turned into a very simple routine. Sleep, eat, poop. Sleep, eat, poop. Pretty easy stuff really.

Yesterday I picked up our X-Mas tree. Since moving out of my mom’s house at 19, I haven’t had my own tree. Since this is Pen’s first X-Mas, Les and I thought it’d be important to start our own family tradition. While I was putting the tree up, Pen couldn’t stop staring at the lights! She didn’t get to see the finished product, but I’m sure she’ll find it fascinating!

Shopping for books

When we were pregnant, a friend of L’s gave us a book, What To Expect The First Year that she had found on some street corner in SF. Our copy is a bit out of date, having been printed in 1996, so we wanted to find the most recent printing and see if it was worth updating our copy.

We took a walk with the baby the other day at our local outdoor mall, which just happens to have a B&N and stopped in for a look. There were enough changes in the new edition that it warranted a purchase, which we took care of today through an online purchase at B&N’s website.

Being new parents, we’re always on the lookout for suggestions or ideas that can help us with our new responsibilities. P’s only 3 weeks old and she’s quite a handful. Our current challenge is trying to get her down for naps. She’s not a sleeper, at least not at the moment, and only seems to sleep for a total of 10-12 hours a day, mostly at night. Anytime we can get her to take a nap during the day, it’s a miracle.

We had a pediatrician appt. this AM and our doctor recommended another book for us to check out, The Happiest Baby on the Block. We added this to our purchase today and are looking forward to learning about new techniques for helping P get to sleep.

Hi. My name’s Penelope

Our daughter joined us on July 7th in the late evening. At 9lbs. 7oz. and 22″ long, she’s a big baby, beating both mom and dad’s birth stats! The last 6 days have been a whirlwind and both Leslie and I have been losing days, often forgetting what day of the week it is. For all the hard week, watching Pen progress every day is pretty amazing. I swear our baby is already trying to over-achieve, just like her momma!

Our new Herman Miller rocker!!

Our new Eames replica rocking chair by Herman Miller was delivered this morning! We’d been shopping around for something to use when feeding the little one and loved the pieces by Baby Letto, but our cats would destroy the fabric. The wife is a design geek, so she started looking at different solutions she’d seen other people comment about on baby forums. The price of this piece was very comparable to other’s that were more baby focused and we get a piece that’s going to last a lifetime.

We purchased our’s from All Modern but you can find them on Amazon.com – Herman Miller Eames® Molded Plastic Rocker Chair

Window tinting in Oakland

As preparation for the baby, we wanted to get our car window’s tinted. We used Yelp to find an installer that was local to us and stumbled upon ‘Professional Film Installations’ in West Oakland.

Jim (the owner) was very pleasant to deal with. Spoke with him on a Wednesday and set up an appointment for the following Saturday morning at 8:30. When I arrived, he pulled some samples to attach to the windows so I could get an idea of what it’d look like. The wife and I were primarily looking for sun and heat protection for the new baby, so a darker tint was preferable, but I thought it’d be a bit too dark. Once the samples were put up though, the view from inside wasn’t as filtered as I thought it might be, so went for the darkest tint for the side windows and the medium tint for the back. Jim indicated it shouldn’t take more then 4 hours and that he’d call me around 1:30. Got the call to come pick up the cat at 1:45.

I’d recommend Jim at ‘Professional Film Installers’ for anyone looking for window tinting!!
